FAQ'S

Helpful Information

CAN I BRING MY PET TO COSTA RICA?

Yes! It is very easy. I brought my puppy with me from the United States and had no issues.

The requirements are a health check from your veterinarian within 10 days of travel. I brought my puppy on the plane, but you can also put your dog underneath the plane in cargo. There are services that assist with this. Every airline is different so check your specific airline for rules and regulations.

Click here for a link to the health check paperwork you will need. Feel free to reach out with additional questions.

CAN I BUY PROPERTY IN COSTA RICA?

Yes! A foreigner can own property in Costa Rica outright just as if they were a citizen. Read about my experience buying my condo here

IS THERE CRIME IN COSTA RICA?

In the area of Playa Hermosa crime is really non-existent. I initially moved by myself with my dog and never once have I felt unsafe. Now, am I going to walk down a dark alley by myself in the dead of night? Probably not. Am I going to leave my brand new iPhone unattended on the beach for all to see? No. As long as you are smart and don't put yourself in bad situations you are unlikely to experience crime of any kind.

IS THE WATER SAFE TO DRINK?

Yes! In well developed, populated areas like Playa Hermosa the water is perfectly okay to drink. IF you are ever in questions of whether the water is good to drink feel free to buy bottled water. If you are planning on traveling to more rural and undeveloped areas I would suggest asking the locals and they will tell you whether or not it is safe.

CAN YOU HAVE A COSTA RICAN BANK ACCOUNT?

Yes! You can have a bank account in Costa Rica and it is quite easy to set up. You will need a few items depending on the bank. I had to provide my passport and my previous year of tax returns. The banks here are very cautious of money laundering, so you cannot have more than your income deposited into your bank account in Costa Rica. If you do, you will need a good explanation of where it came from. The bank will explain all of this to you. You can also choose to keep your money in USD or have it in CRC (Costa Rican Colones).

Most banks even have a user friendly app just like banks in the US. If you are going to spend a considerable amount of time in Costa Rica and own property It makes sense to open an account and have easier access to funds if you get in a pinch.

I personally bank at Banco BCT and highly recommend it. There are other banks that I hear are just as good. Do your research and open and account where it makes the most sense for you.

DOES COSTA RICA HAVE GOOD HEALTHCARE?

Costa Rica has excellent healthcare and is arguably the best in Latin America. There are several state of the art hospitals so there is no need to worry if an emergency arises. With current travel to Costa Rica you need insurance to enter the country. Some U.S. insurances are able to be used in Costa Rica as well.

If you obtain residency in Costa Rica there is "Caja" which is universal government run healthcare or there is still the option to get private healthcare with a private insurance or just paying out of pocket. Depending on the service Costa Rica medical care can be a third to a fifth less cost than the U.S.

IS THERE DOGGIE DAYCARE OR BOARDING?

Yes! I was unsure if I would be able to find a doggie day care or boarding in Costa Rica, but there are several available. You'll also likely meet friends that will be happy to watch your pup.

I personally take my dog to India Care and I cannot say enough good things about them. They also have an in house dog groomer so it's a one stop shop if you are needing those services also.
